Valladolid está rodeada de cenotes y casi todos se pueden hacer en medio día. El error más común no es elegir mal el cenote: es llegar a la misma hora que todos los demás.

Cenote Zací — 790 metros

Dentro de la ciudad, a diez minutos caminando desde Casa Aluxes. Semiabierto, con lianas colgando y un mirador arriba. No es el más espectacular, pero es el único al que se llega a pie.

Cuándo ir: a media mañana, o al mediodía cuando el calor en la calle ya no se aguanta.

Cenote Oxman — 3.5 km

Cenote de bóveda con raíces largas cayendo desde el techo y una cuerda para saltar al agua. Está dentro de una hacienda, así que suele haber alberca y restaurante en el mismo lugar.

Cuándo ir: temprano. Es de los primeros que ponen los tours en el itinerario.

Cenote Suytún — 8.4 km

El de la plataforma circular de piedra y el rayo de luz que baja desde la abertura del techo. Es el más fotografiado de Yucatán, con lo bueno y lo malo que eso implica.

Cuándo ir: a la apertura. El rayo de luz depende de la posición del sol y de la época del año, y la fila para la plataforma puede pasar de una hora a media mañana.

Los cenotes de Ek Balam — 24 km

Alrededor de la zona arqueológica de Ek Balam hay varios cenotes menos concurridos que los de la ruta principal. Combinan bien: ruinas temprano, cenote después.

Reglas que aplican en todos

  • Bloqueador biodegradable, o directamente sin bloqueador. En muchos cenotes te piden ducharte antes de entrar y no es capricho: el agua está conectada al manto freático.
  • Efectivo. Varios no aceptan tarjeta.
  • Llega en el primer turno o en el último. La franja de 11 a 3 es la peor en todos.

Cómo organizarlo desde Valladolid

Hospedándote en el centro puedes hacer Zací caminando y dos cenotes más en auto la misma mañana. Desde Cancún o Tulum, con dos horas de camino por lado, ese mismo plan no cabe en un día.

Valladolid is ringed by cenotes and most can be done in half a day. The common mistake isn't picking the wrong cenote — it's arriving at the same hour as everyone else.

Cenote Zací — 790 metres

Inside the town, a ten-minute walk from Casa Aluxes. Semi-open, with vines hanging down and a viewpoint above. Not the most spectacular, but the only one you can reach on foot.

When to go: mid-morning, or at midday when the heat on the street becomes unbearable.

Cenote Oxman — 3.5 km

A vaulted cenote with long roots dropping from the ceiling and a rope swing into the water. It sits inside a hacienda, so there's usually a pool and restaurant on site.

When to go: early. It's one of the first stops tour operators schedule.

Cenote Suytún — 8.4 km

The one with the circular stone platform and the shaft of light coming down through the opening in the roof. It's the most photographed in Yucatán, with everything good and bad that implies.

When to go: at opening. The light beam depends on the sun's position and the time of year, and the queue for the platform can exceed an hour by mid-morning.

The Ek Balam cenotes — 24 km

Around the Ek Balam archaeological site there are several cenotes far less crowded than those on the main circuit. They pair well: ruins early, cenote after.

Rules that apply everywhere

  • Biodegradable sunscreen, or none at all. Many cenotes ask you to shower before entering, and it isn't fussiness: the water connects to the aquifer.
  • Cash. Several don't take cards.
  • Arrive in the first slot or the last. The 11-to-3 window is the worst at all of them.

How to organise it from Valladolid

Staying in the centre, you can do Zací on foot and two more cenotes by car the same morning. From Cancún or Tulum, with two hours of driving each way, that plan doesn't fit into a day.
